AN EVALUATION OF CONSUMER SEGMENTS FOR FARMERS’ MARKET CONSUMERS IN INDIANA AND ILLINOIS AgEcon
Arrington, Kendra; Dennis, Jennifer H.; Mazzocco, Michael A..
In Spring 2005 and Fall 2009 consumer surveys were collected in several Metropolitan 4 cities in Indiana and Illinois to explore differences based on psychographic and behavioral 5 characteristics of farmers’ market consumers. Consumer intercept surveys were conducted in: 6 South Bend, IN; Bloomington, IN; Springfield, IL and Peoria, IL. Likert scale questions were 7 analyzed using factor and hierarchical cluster analysis to identify clusters of consumers based on 8 several farmers’ market characteristics. Survey results show that of the 164 Metropolitan 9 surveys analyzed, 85.3% of respondents were Caucasian, 71.9% were between the ages of 35 and 10 64 and 78% were female. Data analysis showed that four clusters were formed: Recreational 11 (42%),...

Análisis de la estratificación empleada en campañas de evaluación de recursos demersales costeros en la Zona Común de Pesca Argentino-Uruguaya y en El Rincón, 1994 OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G.; Lasta, C.A.; Aubone, A..
The data belong to the demersal fishery research cruise H-13/94. Stratification used for research surveys from the catches values was tested, both for the northern area, Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) located between 34° and 39°S, and the southern area situated between 38°30' and 41°30'S (El Rincón, Buenos Aires Prov., Argentina). The variables considered were: croaker and striped weak fish densities and depth. Discriminant factor analysis indicates the formation of two and six strata for the southern and northern areas respectively. The adequate confidential limits of the estimated biomass for each strata obtained for different species, indicate that the criteria for stratification is satisfactory. The number of catches by strata was...

Analysis of Participatory Research Projects in the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center AgEcon
Lilja, Nina K.; Bellon, Mauricio R..
Through a survey of scientists from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in 2004, this study assessed the extent to which participatory methods had been used by the center, how they were perceived by the scientists, and how participatory research could be applied more effectively by CIMMYT and partners. Results for 19 CIMMYT projects suggest among other things that participatory approaches at the center were largely “functional”—that is, aimed at improving the efficiency and relevance of research—and had in fact added value to the research efforts. The authors suggest that CIMMYT should (1) create a more conducive environment for scientists to share experiences on such approaches and (2) better document their impacts on farmers’...

Etude de l’hydrodynamique sédimentaire de la lagune de Bizerte OceanDocs
Béjaoui, B.; Brahim, M.; Ataoui, A..

Evaluation of the Status of the Namibian Hake Resource (Merluccius spp.) Using Statistical Catch-at-Age Analysis OceanDocs
Kirchner, Carola; Kainge, Paul; Kathena, Johannes.
Namibian hake is the most important fish resource in Namibia. This monograph is a compilation of all the hake data, historic and recent, that has been used to inform stock assessment and management since the late 1970s. It presents the statistical catch-at-age analysis used to evaluate the state of the Namibian hake resource under different assumptions. This analysis treats the two hakes, Merluccius paradoxus and M. capensis, as a single stock. The data and modeling show that the stock has not as yet recovered to its maximum sustainable yield level, despite foreign fishing effort having been removed in 1990. Best estimates suggest the current stock to be roughly 20% of pre-exploitation levels; however this figure is sensitive to model assumptions. Signs...

In-Store Evaluation of Consumer Willingness to Pay for “Farm-Raised” Pre-Cooked Roast Beef: A Case Study AgEcon
Nalley, Lawton Lanier; Hudson, Darren; Rogers, Robert W.; Martin, James M.; Herring, Joshua L..
A choice-based conjoint experiment was used to examine consumer willingness to pay for a farm-raised pre-cooked roast beef product. Consumers were contacted in a grocery store and provided a sample of the pre-cooked product. Findings indicate there is a small, but statistically significant willingness-to-pay premium for the farm-raised product, suggesting that some product differentiation may result in higher prices for these products. The study outlines an approach to marketing research.

Invasion of North American beaver (Castor canadensis) in the province of Magallanes, southern Chile: comparison between dating sites through interviews with the local community and dendrochronology RChHN
Graells,Giorgia; Corcoran,Derek; Aravena,Juan Carlos.
BACKGROUND: Twenty beavers Castor canadensis (Castoridae) were initially introduced in the Argentinean portion of Tierra del Fuego Island, from where they have occupied most of the Fuegian Archipelago and even reached the continent. This invasion is causing great damage to the subantarctic forest ecosystems, and it is not known how fast the species is spreading. While there is an estimation of this advance using interviews, it is not known how reliable these are and they cannot be made in remote areas. On the mainland, where beavers were present, their date of arrival was estimated using interviews and dendrochronology, and the dates obtained by both methods were compared for each site. RESULTS: Differences were found among the groups of respondents,...

La pêche aux petits metiers en Languedoc-Roussillon en 2000 - 2001 ArchiMer
Guillou, Alain; Lespagnol, Patrick; Ruchon, François.
"Small trades" refers to the body of fishing boats, excepting the trawlers, which have a trawling license and the tuna/sardine boats, which have a pelagic fishing license. The ships that fish for small pelagic fish by using a lamp are only included for the other trades they ply, if applicable. Whereas certain "small trades" work offshore, the majority of them exploit the lagoons and coastal area. The importance of the coastal areas in general, where a large number of biological and ecological processes are being developed, need no longer be demonstrated: A large part of primary and secondary production takes place in these areas, which host moreover many reproduction and nursery sites for a great many species. "Small trade" fishing is one of the main...
